What happened next came in flashes. I was pretty sure that Hope and Ethan returned just in time to stop things from really getting out of control––what I had attempted to do earlier––but they were more successful at it. Then, I could recall several sounds, chaotic movements, heightened panic––cocooning the flurry of activity around me. I wanted to join in, but the darkness kept enveloping me. For some reason, I was out of control, unable to regain any semblance or reality. I found it incredibly frustrating, but I was too weak to fight it.

Once I heard the unmistakable sound of Joseph’s fathers around me, shouting and carrying on in their usual over the top manner, I knew that we were finally back at the Bed and Breakfast. I guess that allowed me to relax because I knew that we were safe, so I collapsed into the exhaustion for a while. I gave up the battle and let the darkness win.

By the time I came to, more yelling enveloped my auditory system. This time it wasn’t because of Joseph’s fathers giving him a hard time, as usual, it was Ethan and everyone else doing the shouting. I certainly wasn’t cognizant enough to hear any particular words or to string a sentence together myself, but I could make out the gist of the argument. They were more than annoyed with him. Furious, in fact, because he had put John and I in danger, and I ended up getting seriously hurt. Even though I agreed with their reaction to Joseph’s actions––as I was the one who had done all the yelling in the first place––I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to defend Joseph. He might have made a mistake, but he wasn’t a bad person. I didn’t think he had intended for anyone to get harmed. He was just struggling with the high-pressure circumstances we were under, and the fact that he couldn’t do anything to stop it, frustrated him even more. He wanted to take control of something, and that was the only thing he had at the time. Sure, it wasn’t the smartest decision in the world, and he did end up putting me in danger, but I was sure that he felt bad about it without anyone else making him feel worse. We needed to work as a team, but in that case, we didn’t. We had to get our shit together and support one another. Even in this state of confusion, I was lucid enough to know that.

Now, I just needed to find a way to get my head in order, so I could sort this out.

I seemed to lose consciousness again for a while. I certainly lost track of the conversation, so by the time I came back to again, there were fewer people around me. I could sense less energies in the room before I even opened my eyes. But I wasn’t by myself, I knew that much. Since it was silent in the room, I needed to prize my eyes apart––however much it hurt me to see what situation I found myself in.
